Home to the National Collection of Sweet Peas and other Lathyrus

Roger Parsons Sweet Peas, a bit about us...

We hold the National Collection of Sweet Peas (Lathyrus odoratus) and other Lathyrus species. This includes over 1300 varieties of Sweetpeas and all Lathyrus in cultivation. We believe this website advertises the largest selection of Sweet Pea varieties in the World but we cannot include them all. If you are looking for a particular Sweet Pea and cannot find it here, please ask because we should have seed available in our seedbank.

Roger Parsons Sweet Peas was founded in 2005 and has quickly built a reputation for excellent germination and the high purity of our varieties. We produce seed here in Sussex where emphasis is placed on conserving the quality of varieties and the storage of our seed so that it remains harvest fresh. In addition to our emphasis on conservation of cultivars, Roger uses the enormous genepool we hold to produce new Sweet Peas with innovative form and colours, and to improve existing colours and types.

Featured Varieties

Some of our most popular varieties can be found here. For the full range, please see the ‘shop’ link above.

Which type of Sweet Peas will suit your needs?

When we say there are a few different types of sweet peas we are referring to their key characteristics and flower form.
If your priority is long stems and large flowers then the Spencer varieties are the best option for you. If you like highly scent blooms for the house, then the Old-Fashioned are a good option.  Grandiflora make a lovely garden decoration and cut flowers for a posy with their high scent but the range of colours is limited.

Spencer

Long stems and large frilly flowers. Good for exhibition and cut flower production. Our most popular type.

Variety featured 'Mrs Bernard Jones'

Old-Fashioned

Highly scented but with smaller flowers and shorter stems. Make a good scented posy for the house.

Variety featured 'Black Knight'

Grandiflora

A intermediate of both Spencer and Old-Fashioned varieties. Highly scented with longer stems. Limited colour range.

Variety featured 'Albutt Blue''

Lathyrus Species

Cousins to the Sweet Pea, Lathyrus species are within the same family but are rarely scented. They come in both annual and perennial forms with a wide range of plant heights and colours.

Annual Lathyrus Species
Very easy to grow, most annuals can be left to self-seed around the garden for year on year colour. Can be sown in succession to prolong the flowering season.

Perennial Lathyrus Species
Can be slow to germinate but last for many years. Come in a wide range of height and colours.

The risks of importing seeds...

Our Terms and Conditions state that orders can only be sent to an address outside Great Britain at the purchaser’s risk. Why is this?

From 1st January 2021, seeds exported from Great Britain should be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate. We can obtain this certificate for customers if requested but the cost is very expensive. Customer may also be liable to charges by their own Customs service for managing the importation of seeds.
Please think carefully before placing an order from a supplier in the UK. We welcome your order but shipping is at your own risk and we cannot give you a refund if your seeds are destroyed by your country’s Customs. Experience from the USA has been that 94% of shipments arrive safely but importing into European countries may vary.
